Parting Gift Calculations

At an Art Opening last week I met a smart pretty women in her late thirties who did technology consulting but had always wanted to be a writer. About a year ago she met a wealthy Hedge Fund manager from Greenwich CT who claimed to be in the tail end of his marriage. Even though he was much older she was turned on by the power he exuded from being extremely wealthy.

They started seeing each other on a weekly basis. For the next 12 months he provided her with a luxury condo and a stipend so she wouldn't have to work and therefore focus on her new novel. After 12 months he decided that he wanted to reconcile with his wife.

He was therefore terminating the affair and offered her a $10,000 parting gift. She was insulted because he was worth at least $150 million and she spend possibly the last reproductive year of her life with him. She thought she should get a very reasonable $1 million. A pittance compared to the sizable embarrassment she could cause if she had to.

So let me ask you this. What is the appropriate way to calculate a parting gift at the end of an affair? Post your comments below!
